Not familiar with Lunar New Year? Here’s what you need to know

Each culture has their own version of this, with different traditional foods and rituals. However, the importance of spending this time with your closest friends and family remains the same across the board.

A fresh start

Prior to Lunar New Year’s Eve, families undertake thorough cleaning of their homes to sweep away the misfortunes of the past year. Then, they adorn every corner of their homes with red decorations, symbolizing wishes for happiness and fortune in the coming year.

Beautiful wishes

Every tradition, decoration, key dish carries a beautiful wish for the coming year. Fireworks and firecrackers are meant to ward off any lingering negativity from the past year. Symbolic dishes such as dumplings, fish, glutinous rice cake (Nian Gao), and sweet rice balls (Tang Yuan), each represents a heartfelt wish.

Coming together

Family reunion lies at the heart of this festival, drawing loved ones from far and wide back to their homes. Spending quality time with loved ones is always the most important part of the Lunar New Year.

Today, we extend our warmest wishes to all those in the hospitality industry celebrating the Lunar New Year.
